How I’m preparing to love the Quran this Ramadan

I woke up this morning to an amazing article by a brother about how so many people around the globe dedicate their whole lives to learning and memorising the Quran. I then listened to a talk about how we should recite as much Quran as possible in Ramadan. Not the minimum, not let’s try to recite some, but actually recite lots and lots of it.

This made me think about my Quran related Ramadan goals for this year, as I put them down on paper I realised that to make my recitation more fruitful, more beautiful and more meaningful I needed to prepare for it properly. One of the reasons I thought about this was due to not being able to fully complete my goals list last year. This made me sad and I don’t want the same to happen this year.

Here’s what I think I should do from now until Ramadan inshaAllah:

🔸 look over all my tajweed notes and revise the rules

🔸 make a list of all the surahs I know off by heart so I can recite them during the night prayer

🔸 read the translation and tafseer of the above surahs – so I can actually appreciate what I recite in salah (currently reading Tafseer Ibn Kathir and I love it)

🔸 make a time table for when I can recite Quran. For example: after each salah for 5 mins etc. (I have college and exams this year in Ramadan so I need to be as productive as possible)

🔸 make a list of surahs I want to memorise and add this to the Quran timetable

🔸 listen to and read about Quran related topics – this will help with remaining motivated

🔸 make dua for Allah to help me with these and to allow me to witness Ramadan iA.

We should always remember the Quran and the month of Ramadan are related with great significance:

“The month of Ramadan in which I revealed the Quran as guidance to mankind …” [2:185]

I think, sometimes we all overlook the immense reward that comes with Quran recitation:

The Prophet (saw) said:

“Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah, he will have a reward. And that reward will be multiplied by ten. I am not saying that “Alif, Laam, Meem” is a letter, rather I am saying that “Alif” is a letter, “laam” is a letter and “meem” is a letter.” So increase your recitation of the Qur’an to gain these merits.” (Tirmidhi)

And now imagine these rewards being multiplied in the blessed month of Ramadan. SubhanAllah, which one of us isn’t in need of and full of desire to earn these rewards?
